Herd documentation is a vital part of our fertility treatment program. We monitor the herd and document the horses and their social structure.
We actively support the utilization of PZP to control population. We have certified volunteers who administer the birth control using approved methods.
We meet with the BLM as needed to discuss range conditions, make suggestions for habitat improvement, and maintain a working relationship.
It is our goal to keep the horses wild on the range and prevent roundups. If the BLM determines horses need to be removed from the range, we will be their voice and insist upon the use of humane bait and trap removal.
Our group exists for the horses and we want them to live on the range for decades to come for all to enjoy.
THE SAND WASH ADVOCATE TEAM (SWAT) is a group of dedicated volunteers working to support and preserve the wild horses of Sand Wash Basin in Colorado.
We come from all walks of life, ranching, business, education, medical, retirees – we are mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and grandfathers, and even grandchildren! We came together formally

In the fall of 2019 SWAT decided it was time to become our own entity, and we formed a 501c3 non profit. We are the same people and faces, but our own independent group working on behalf of Sand Wash Basin Wild horses.
We will continue to support the efforts of GEMS and all that is done off range to provide meaningful, safe lives for mustangs.
